The way to PASS the B1 Citizenship Test
This path is for people who need Romanian not just as a legal requirement, but as a real bridge to their citizenship journey.
Since 2025, Romania has updated citizenship rules requiring many descent-based applicants to prove Romanian at B1 level through an official exam issued by accredited institutions such as the Institutul Limbii Române, the Institutul Cultural Român, Romanian cultural institutes abroad, or certain accredited universities.
My role is to help you prepare for the B1 citizenship test with a personal 1-on-1 pathway, structured support, and realistic mock assessment along the way. - Ștefan Paiu
12 Months to B1
Going from zero to B1 in Romanian typically takes about 12 months with a consistent, well-structured plan, and that is the framework I use for my program.
The exact timeline can be shorter or longer depending on your previous language background, your age, how much time you can study each week, and how much real contact you have with Romanian outside the lessons. Some people move faster because they already know a related language or have daily exposure to Romanian, while others need more time because they are starting from scratch and have limited practice between classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this apply to me?
If you're applying for citizenship through Romanian descent and haven't already proven B1-level Romanian through an accredited institution, this change likely applies to you. Book a free call and I'll help confirm your situation.
What exactly is the B1 requirement?
Since 2025, descent-based citizenship applicants must prove Romanian at B1 level via an official exam from an accredited institution — not just a general language requirement, but a formal, tested standard.
What does the exam test?
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing at B1 level, plus a heavy grammar and vocabulary component. My program builds all of these so no part of the exam catches you off guard.
Do you issue the certificate?
No — the official B1 certificate is only issued by accredited institutions like ILR, Universitatea din București, Babeș-Bolyai, or Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
Can I start above zero?
Yes — the 12-month path is flexible. If you're already at A2, we adjust the plan and timeline to focus on what's left to reach B1, not repeat what you already know.
Can I go faster than 12 months?
Yes, if you already know a related language or have daily Romanian exposure. Twelve months is the framework for a typical learner starting from zero with consistent weekly study.
What does a typical week look like?
One or two lessons a week, plus assigned work through materials, books, videos, and real exposure to Romanian. You'll complete a journal entry at the end of each week to track progress.
Is this fully online?
Yes, fully online. If you're based in Bucharest, I also organize occasional in-person activities for second-language speakers — a nice bonus, though outside the scope of this course.
What's included besides lessons?
You get structured 1-on-1 lessons and discounts on recommended books to support your learning. Group speaking classes aren't included by default, but can be added on top of the program.
Can I combine with group classes?
Yes — group speaking classes can be added alongside your 1-on-1 program, at 2 or 4 sessions per month, for extra practice with other learners.
How is progress tracked?
Progress toward B1 is reviewed weekly, with formal level tests at the end of A1 and A2 to confirm you're on track before moving to the next stage.
What if I don't reach B1 in time?
If you follow my structure, plan, and recommended weekly hours, you will reach B1 — this is the track record that gets students there. You'll log your hours and achievements in a weekly journal, so we catch any gaps early.
What happens after Month 12?
If you don't already have a contact or lawyer handling this, I'll guide you on how and when to apply for the official exam, and you'll sit it through an accredited institution. This is language coaching, not legal or immigration advice — for the citizenship application itself, consult a qualified lawyer.
How much does it cost?
Foundation Building (Month 1) is a flat €200. From Month 2 onward, classes are billed in monthly packs starting from €36/class, depending on pace and structure — book a free call for a personalised quote.
Refunds or pausing?
You can pause anytime, though any break pushes your 12-month deadline back. No refunds — but since Months 2-12 are billed per class rather than a lump sum, you can simply stop whenever you like.
What happens on the consultation call?
We discuss your goals, current level, and timeline, and I outline a personalised plan. It's a no-obligation conversation to see if this path is the right fit for you.
What qualifications and experience do you have as a Romanian tutor?
I started tutoring Romanian online in May 2020 during the pandemic and have not had a break ever since. In April 2025 I was accredited the EUROLTA certification for teaching Romanian as a second language. I was among the first 4 people to ever receive this qualification.
How long have you been teaching Romanian online?
Since I started in May 2020.
